Meme
1. What is your favorite food? Mmmmmmm this is such a hard question to answer, but I think I can do it. It is bread. Would you like to know why? I would like to answer you in Dinosaur Comics form (the best possible way to answer anything), but I cannot seem to find the comic I am thinking of in search. That means it hasn't been transcribed yet. But basically- they have had thousands of years to perfect bread, and it shows, because it is awesome in all of its forms. Although I don't really like pumpernickel. Or rye.

2. How did you get into the Decemberists? At what point did you go from "hey, this is cool" to "OMG Colin"? So much talking about The Decemberists )

3. What would you rather be doing.... right now? I would rather not be wearing this uncomfortable bra, which you would think would be easier to remedy, except that I would have to change into pajamas, which means I'd have to go upstairs. Alternatively, I would rather be on a date with #1 crush Richard Ayoade instead of home watching "My Name is Earl."

4. Something extremely exciting and momentous has happened to you. Who do you tell about it first? Why? I would probably tell my sister Samantha first, because we are sister BFFs. She doesn't always care when I tell her things, but she is usually the closest person to me, so she is the one that gets to hear it first. Then I would definitely call my actual BFF Annie, because she and I are good at telling each other how awesome we are (which is why we are good friends). Then, obviously, I would tweet it and update my facebook status.

5. Fabulous technologies now allow people to live inside of books. What book would you like to live in, or at least visit for a week or two? OH THIS IS SO HARD. Poo. I thought about this all day, and I came up with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Early 19th century London actually wouldn't be so fabulously interesting, though, unless I were directly related to one of the main characters. Luckily, I have a MEGA-CRUSH on Jonathan Strange. Although his wife got rather a raw bargain. I would rather be Strange, I think. OH, Byronic hero. And ginger. I always wanted to be a ginger. There are loads of books I'd want to try. Howl's Moving Castle, OH MAN so cool to live in a land where fairy tale rules apply. I'm the oldest, though. Bunk. The Redwall books? I looooved the Redwall books when I was younger. I would be a badger. Rraaaaaawr. The list goes on, and it doesn't get more interesting.

I asked [info]atelierlune for 5 words and I got them, and since I am running super late and my laundry still isn't dry, I am gonna finally do them now.

hipster: I know them. Let me show you them. My friend Tyler should probably be the face of latfh.com ) God love 'im, that's a genuine Clash leather jacket from the 80s. As you might imagine he does loads of blow and has 2 children out of wedlock.

hopeful: I don't know if this describes me. I wonder if other people see me as hopeful. I generally feel kind of fatalistic.

nerds: The candy? Delicious little sugar bombs. I was a nerd, I still am, if you can use the word nerd to mean something other than a smart person, and just someone who's enthusiastic about like, French.

rose: My user name, if you can believe it, is from Rabi-en-Rose, from what was it called? That anime-thing with Dejiko. It was a Japanese-ation of La Vie en Rose. Each day I get more bothered by the fact that it should be "Le bien rose." ARTICLE AGREEMENT FAIL

xanadu: Actually this makes me think of South Park from the episode about "Save the Rainforest. "Xanadu-doo-wow! There's a place called the rainforest that really sucks ass!" But I know she's talking about her series of Decemberists fic which, quite frankly, is hella yummy. P:

I'm marathoning Escaflowne on animecrazy.net. The other night I watched like 5 episodes of Chobits that I had on CD-R and thought, "I think I have grown out of animu because this is hella stupid, and this main character dude is super annoying! I do not find his ineptitude around women funny in the least! What is your deal, anime?" But no, it turns out that show really was just stupid, because Escaflowne is roughly as awesome as I remember it being. Don't lie, I will still finish watching Chobits because I want to know how it ends. I only read the first book of the manga. :(

My bike got a flat tire already, which did not surprise me because the tires had dry-rot, but I was hoping that they would hold on until I got paid and had enough money for a new set of wheels. I may wait even longer until I can afford to convert it into a 3-speed, because seriously the combination of a single-speed bike, my unfitness, and the amount of hills in my neighborhood is just awful, and meanwhile just get my exercises from walking. Not that I am gonna get much walking until I am finished watching ESCAFLOWNE.

Seriously you guys I love it. I can't wait until later on in the series because if I remember correctly it gets pretty real.

End Nerdy Transmission

WAIT PS This mashup of Britney Spears and Department of Eagles is amazing guys. I am pretty sure it is Chuck Bass the theme song, except that it was made before that episode where Chuck is smoking in the opium den and the Dept. of Eagles song plays BUT W/E I can have my little fantasy.

When was the last time you cooked for yourself? What did you make?

View 502 Answers

I made some rather disastrous pancakes. I'm not sure what went wrong exactly. Well, I guess I am. They tasted fine, but the batter was too thin, because I added more milk (as directed for "thinner pancakes" recipe). What a gyp, bisquick, don't say that you can add 1 1/2 c. of milk for thinner pancakes if it makes the batter too thin to even... Ugh. Anyway, I couldn't get them to flip properly so they were all tiny and scrunched up. I cooked up the batter on three separate occasions, and finally on that last go I got it working, sort of, by pouring the batter into a small saucepan and using lots of batter to make them thicker, but they burned a little on the outside. ANYWAY.

I bought a bike from my friend Dennis today. It was for a good cause. It was for two good causes: Dennis needs money to move to Seattle, and I need to get in shape. It's a 60's single speed Columbia.

Dennis somehow made the picture look all vintage and shit! )

Everyone, I have slowly been de-lurking on LJ after taking another brief hiatus, as I am wont to do, and am here with a few brief updates on my life.

I CAVED and got a twitter. Mainly it is for following all of my various celebrity crushes and I am starting to think that celebrity twitters are my fandom. "HOLY COW, John Hodgman and Neil Gaiman are both in London and going to dinner together, TOO CUTE." All of my celebrity tweeters are interconnected in amazing ways. Eric Wareheim and Rainn Wilson are friends? Yes plz? Rainn Wilson and Rhett Miller seem to have struck up a twitter friendship? Squeeeee! Etc. It's totally sad.

At first I did not tweet too much, because I am boring and only have a few friends following me, most of whom I am already friends with on facebook or in, you know, real life, but now I have a blip.fm account, which is like twitter, except with music (if you click the link, you'll see what I mean). Anyone reading this should sign up and friend me, and then we can be DJ friends, woo-woo! Also, I set it up so that it sends my blips to my twitter, and now I am blowin' up twitter with music recommendations. THE END.

My sister broke her ankle and is staying with my other sister and her girlfriend, but tonight said sister and girlfriend are going to a b&b, so I'm gonna stay at their house tonight and watch their dogs and broken-ankle sister.

My friend Shaun has a podcast. It's mildly amusing, if you are into listening to two dudes just talk about mildly amusing shit (and really, who doesn't). I have lol'ed more times than I can count, because I haven't been counting. You can search for "Team Hurricane" on iTunes, or go to here I guess (I just subscribed on iTunes). Soooo yeah... podcast.

For a good introduction to Shaun I recommend watching the short film that he wrote a couple of years ago called Fun of the Dead and which is actually funny, and awesome, and I still quote it all the time, on the reals. He is in it, and plays, naturally, the writer. I am not in it because I am allergic to being on film mostly, but a lot of my friends are.

eta: Are you on facebook? Best. Group. Ever. Better than Anti-war, Pro-kittens by a long shot as far as groups that totally describe my soul.

eta, again: Saturday we are going to Caves Lounge on Division Street in Arlington for his birthday, so if any of you in the area want to go to there and get drunk for reasonable prices then I say, come along!

I saw Watchmen! OMJ. I went into it, somehow, despite not caring about it, relatively unspoiled. I knew the basic plot, but I haven't read the novels and I apparently managed to avoid any major plot revelations. My expectations, to be honest, were low, but they were more than exceeded. Except I giggled like a little school girl at a --SPOILER ALERT-- certain sex scene in a certain Archie-type-vehicle, because come on, it was funny.

Also, I dramatically cut my bangs today with a little help from Annie. It gives me a touch of the bitch-face, but I like them. )

Thus ends my day of prolific posting, not to be repeated for months, at least.

Post Script: I guess Mikey went to the bar tonight. I still don't think he's talking to me, since he didn't come to my birthday, but I can't actually bring myself to care as much as I would've in the past. I guess if he's still going to the Chat, we'll see each other eventually and I'll work it out then. The bartender that I had sort of half-way not-too-seriously set my sights on, it turns out, was casually seeing another of my friends, so, you know, bummer about that, but not really.

How long has this been around? This... this is awesome. I am gonna find the right one, and I am gonna write a rock opera about it.

eta: OMFJC, I found it, I found my rock opera already. "He's a leather-clad white trash vampire hunter on a mission from God. She's an elegant snooty queen of the dead looking for love in all the wrong places. They fight crime!" PERFECT.

The song they are using in the new Gossip Girl promos is absolutely amazing. Don't say I never gave you anything. Mikey and his lady friend recommended Ida Maria to me about two months ago, but of course I never take anything seriously until Gossip Girl has sanctified it. Speaking of that, yes, I did a bad thing on Tuesday, and, as usual, the gravity of the situation has taken a few days to settle in. At first I thought, "Whatever, fuck the haters! It was totally no big deal." But if it gets out, it would kind of ruin my reputation with a certain group of people, one of whom I feel is probably my soul mate, so... uh... we'll see how my birthday goes. My birthday! It's Sunday!

Ida Maria, "Oh My God"

AND OMFGG BONUS:

I feel like Gossip Girl will be going back to being awesome instead of being a hot tranny mess as it was when it came back in January. I need them to bring the OMG, not the WTF.

I am so tired of going to the bar every Friday and Saturday night. I mean, I love my bar. I love it. I am not tired of going to the same bar. But seriously I would rather go on a Monday, or a Thursday. The weekends are fucking amateur night, with a shit-ton of douchebags on the prowl. But we have to go on the weekends, because Annie is a teacher and can't go out on the weeknights, and I can't afford to be going out on the weekend AND during the week when I want to go. Le sigh.

In other news, I have been to the gym when I am supposed to go since I started going again (M/W/F in the afternoon after class) so that's good. But! After I hopped off the bike today I got hit with a crazy bad headache, which has just resurfaced. I took 3 ibuprofens. I hope it helps. I feel kind of sick, like maybe I should not go out. But of course I am going anyways. I'll probably sit outside.

first, Mom! Jeez. Eat one piece of my pizza, whatever, but don't just... take two huge bites out of each piece of pizza and then put them back in the box, you hor.

second, I am afraid my dear Gossip Girl nearly jumped the shark last night. Please take this five week break until sweeps to find your center and make it right. Please. Although this part was good:

Sound clips are fun, right? You get to hear funny accents if your friends are from far, far away. All we really want is to hear your voice, we don't care what you're saying. So here's a list of typical meme questions that would otherwise be boring, but when communicated aloud - well, it's entertaining. Answer these questions in your post, and encourage others with voice sound-clip-posting abilities to do the same.

1) What's your name?
2) How old are you?
3) Where are you from? Are you living there right now?
4) Is it cold where you are?
5) What's the time?
6) What are you wearing?
7) What was the last thing you listened to?
8) What was the last thing you ate?
9) What was the last thing you watched on tv?
10) What's your favorite tv show? Why?
11) Quick! Find a book, or something with text on it! Flip to a random page and read some of it! GO!
12) What was the last movie you saw? How was it?
13) Do YOU think you have an accent? Talk about that.

Guys you should do this if you have a plus or paid account. I did it and I hate my voice. I hate it so bad. But I did not want [info]9goodfingers to feel alone. And yeah, so do give it a listen! I probably don't sound anything like you imagine! I know our had a cute little girl voice. I sound sort of mannish.

I know Classi thinks she is in the best class ever what with getting to read all these fucking amazing classic graphic novels, but I submit that in fact, I am in THA BEST CLASS EVAR!! which is my senior seminar, "Blood Relations." It is about SAINTS and VAMPIRES and explores the mythology of both and how they relate to gender, sexuality, religion, culture, and etc. AND HERE ARE OUR TEXTS

A bunch of saints' lives, which, believe it or not, are hilarious/awesome/violent/sexy
Merchant of Venice
Dracula
I am Legend
Let the Right One In

HOLY SHIT. We even get to watch Let the Right One In when it comes out on DVD. ALSO, wtf I do have to write a 5,250 word paper, but it is going to be about, you know, saints or vampires, so I fail to see how that will be a chore.

Woooooooooo!

Now today is a day of laundry, text books, and brushing up on Old English since probably I will have to read Caedmon's Hymn tomorrow in the original in Brit Lit since the prof also happens to be the woman I had for Old English. </nerd>

So I am dog- and house-sitting for a co-worker while she and her boo are in Vegas for MLK weekend, and I have to say: I take it back. I do not want a big dog, no thank you. Jasper (some kind of lab mix) is really sweet, but he is bouncing off the walls and stepping on my face and tearing shit up, and that is after he's gone on his walk. I'm also going to take him to the dog park and then on his evening walk, but he is a handful. I mean he is still pretty much a puppy - he can't be unsupervised and he basically needs all your attention.

Cats, man. Cats. Are. Awesome.

Still I would probably be in much better shape if I did own a retriever or pit or some other large-type monster dog, though. Must remember to get comfortable shoes from my house for our walks.

I enjoy having a place to write all these things down, where no one in my real life is reading, just a few internet friends. It's nice. Other places, someone will read it and know who or what I am talking about, but not here. I am just some stranger babbling on about my life to a couple of other strangers. Well, of course, not all of you are strangers; I am exaggerating as usual. Here are some things about my life.

1) I saw Colin K at the bar the other night (Christmas Eve!). It was terribly awkward even though I thought it wouldn't be. He literally kept his eyes glued to the table every time I was around. At around gin 'n' tonic #4 I thought it would be a good idea to say hi, even though we were talking shit on what a d-bag he was being all night. Got totally burned ("Yeah, didn't want to talk to you actually,") went to go bawwwwww for a minute, had g 'n' t #5 and went back in like some kind of chump with a pathological need of approval from dudes. The next night I drank even more and ended up rolling around on the floor of my friends' mom's art studio.

2) Family drama! It's okay again I think. On that note, Mikey came to my sister's housewarming party with his girlfriend. They have been together for a month and a half, coincidentally, about as long as he's been ignoring my calls. Anyway, she seemed nice but she is also ~*~a theatre girl~*~ and God, I hate kids who are in drama. Seriously, sorry you guys but people in the theatre department, something about them fucking pushes my buttons. I am kind of over it (finally, 2.5 years later). (Also, her name is Jessica, as is my friend Stephen's girlfriend's. Why can't this Jessica get any play?)

3) On that note I went to one bar tonight with Zoe who is in town from Chicago but of course ended the night at the dear old Chat Room. Another friend did the same bar hop (from the Moon where we were to the Chat) with her ex-boyfriend, who, every time they hang out, she makes sure to trash when he steps away. "Gaaaaaawd he is such a d-bag why am I hanging out with him?" He is also super fucking hot and was giving me the sex eyes tonight (which is awesome because ahhhhh he is like, the hottest guy to ever look at me in such a sexy way). He liked my scarf ("It's like neopolitan ice cream but with pistachio instead of vanilla." "What the fuck I love pistachio ice cream!" "Meee toooooo /drunk!") and at the end of the night I told him good bye, see you around, and he insisted that I say hello to him every time I see him and we grinned like idiots and I maybe sort of said I would be there again 'tomorrow night' a.k.a. tonight, Tuesday. Also, Taco Tuesday, also he said he might go to that, since we mentioned it. Did I mention he was super foxy, although apparently kind of an asshole? Can't hurt to flirt like mad of course. And you know, the things we do while drunk. He had them beer goggles on. Oh well. It was a nice ego boost. Also Zoe and I got TACO CABANA OOO-WOOO. </drunk>

4) I went shopping with Ambular and got THREE SHIRTS and a NECKLACE from Hot Topic which were on clearance at very good prices; I spent $16. The necklace got a lot of compliments tonight. I also got perfume at Victoria's Secret which did not get any compliments tonight but which I love anyway. Also we saw Doubt which was very Meryl Streep-y and intense. Seriously it was awesome when Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Streep were all, "YELL YELL YELL" in the office; I teared up. All in all, AAAAAWESOME Sunday.

THA END.

from left to right, Abe and Meathead

Meathead was a rescue animal; my sister found him on the street, half-starved in a spiked collar and mangy fur. But he was friendly and gregarious. They suspected he might be diabetic and he had definitely been abused. He had food aggression problems. But he was usually good with the other dogs and very submissive to his humans.

He killed a stray that was in their front yard today and had to be put down. I know it will be sad for all of us to deal with this loss. Roxanne had Meaty for less than a year, but he was very much her baby, and he was the first of their four dogs. I will remember him as a good boy. He loved cuddling on the couch. He would climb up next to you and press his head between your back and the couch (or if you were andy, he would dive face first into your nuts). He loved playing with Abe, who is only four months old. Beatrice, a blue heeler/beagle mix, was his little girlfriend and even if he was roughhousing with Abe and Ramona, he would stop to give her kisses.

I know it's easy to say, in this case, that his dog aggression was the result of his breed, being a pit bull mix. But I believe that it happened because he was abused as a puppy and young dog. Meathead was a loving, intelligent, friendly dog, but just like a person who has been abused, he still had residual problems stemming from that abuse, and he still had healing left to do.

Brennen called me last night. He moved down to Colewell or Bryan or some other something hole by College Station and decided not to talk to anyone for four months. It was all good and fun to talk to him again and he is still the coolest person I have ever met and I love him like a ridiculous lesbian hipster brother, so I will probably drive down there to visit him and see his paintings and listen to him play the piano, you know, like the good old days. I am considering just picking him up, though, and going to Austin to get smashammered, which I think he will be okay with.
Also, HOLY SHIT tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I have bought like, no presents and I have to go shower now so that I can do that. Really I do not have very many to buy, just one for a cousin and something to take to the adults, pumpkin bread or something.
